Reality Bites – Legal precedent for TV?

House Rules compensation
A recent court case decision in Australia could have a huge impact on the relationship between reality TV subjects and the TV companies and broadcasters that make the programmes they appear in. In a nutshell; reality tv 'stars' usually have a contract between the TV company and individual, and amongst other things these will say that the reality TV star is not an employee and in turn the company has fewer responsibilities than they would if they were an employer, such as the impact of appearing in the TV show has on their mental health and their reputation after broadcast....

Creating a Buzz: Coldplay

It's four years since the last Coldplay album. In that time the way we listen to and buy music has increasingly changed to online and on demand, with us even being able to now just ask Google or Alexa to play a song we want to hear. So when Coldplay, admittedly 40 something guys who don’t have the image of the likes of Ariana Grande or Dua Lipa, need to get exposure for the new album, what do they do? Well, what they have done has certainly done the job as far as getting a message out is concerned- they placed...

Instagram are going to be rolling out new features over the next couple of months that could possibly change how small businesses use the platform altogether! Bye bye "likes" Instagram announced that posts can be liked, however, the number of likes on a post won't be able to be seen by your audience. This can be seen as a negative but it actually is a huge positive for small businesses! Your customers won't be judging you on your interactions but your quality of what you are posting. "Explore" your way to the top! Instagram have altered their algorythms so that...

Celebs on the Ranch

Back in November I spent three weeks in Arizona working as the Series Director on a new Channel 5 show called 'Celebs on the Ranch'. It featured ten familiar faces off the TV learning how to become cowboys and cowgirls in the real terrain of the southwestern US state. Filming a reality TV show in America may seem at the opposite end of the TV and video making spectrum compared to filming online video at an office in Stockport, but both situations require very similar approaches. Here are two of them. The cameras we used were Sony FS7's and Sony...

I'm interested in finding out about peoples perception of value when it comes to video marketing vs printed materials so just want to throw this out there for comment, can you help? Firstly I would like to highlight that I understand and appreciate the value in printed matter, I feel there will always be a need and desire for print, whether that is glossy brochures, catalogues or any of the other printed items we encounter on a daily basis.  My question is more about how the value of that ie perceived vs video content. Both mediums can convey the same...

Celebs on the Farm

A new TV series that I produced and directed starts on Monday 20th of August at 10pm on Channel 5 and 5 Star. I started Bellyflop 12 years after my TV career started. Occasionally I go back to TV to work on a few shows when the chance arises. One such opportunity was a brand-new series called ‘Celebs on the Farm' which as the title suggests features famous people working on a real farm in Hastings, Sussex. My role on the programme was to lead and support a team of camera operators and sound recordists as we filmed celebrities do...

Google Street View is a handy tool for anyone who is looking for a good way to look around and get the feel for either; an office, a school or nursery, exhibits, health care centres and many more. It’s also used widely for getting detections and looking for visual clues when scouting locations. There are many creative ways that Google Street View can be used. Such as, there is a dog at the moment travelling the world, so that you can see it from a dogs' perspective. 360 cameras are all the rage now, so you can make your own...

Claire Stott of Orbit Developments tells us why visiting the edit benefited her and her film. Transcript: Hi, I'm Claire from Orbit Developments, we are a commercial property company based in South Manchester. The reason I've come in today is because we've been working on a video for Macclesfield Means Business. We're quite lucky because we are [Orbit] 6 or 7 miles away from the office and we could've just communicated to each other via email or on the phone but it does normally end up in email tennis where you're sending edits to each other constantly. So I've popped...

Today I’d like to talk to you about using a teleprompter, which I'm doing right now, and its advantages for those of us who are bilingual. A teleprompter is a device that goes in front of the camera that shows a scrolling script which can be read whilst filming. It’s very similar to using cue cards but reduces eye movement. Just think of...
